ABOUT MOLLY LAMB BOBAK

Molly Lamb Bobak, RCA (Canadian, 1922-2014) was an important 20th century Canadian printmaker, painter, and watercolourist. She was the first Canadian woman to be sent overseas as a war artist during World War II.

Lamb Bobak is known for her masterful handling of crowds and her approach to depicting gatherings, marches, parades, and sporting events. She is also recognized for her sensitive watercolour still lifes of flowers, a subject which she approached like a crowded landscape: "Poppies are like crowds," she told the CBC in 1943, "you don't organize them."

An exquisitely rendered and energetic interior scene. Lamb Bobak quickly captures the setting and details of the space; some elements are rendered in detail - the daffodils, the Moroccan carpet - others are lightly sketched and only suggested - the book and edge of the table, for instance. The composition loosely tumbles from the upper left to the lower right with fields of golden yellow and blue highlights.
